Today there are many finishing coatings for walls. The most popular of them is wallpaper, which primarily perform aesthetic functions. It is used by people from ancient times. In different countries, different types of wallpaper had different extensity of use. For example, European began to decorate the walls with a cloth. Fabric wallpaper, which is now so often used, came from there. China, Japan and other Eastern countries gave rise to the paper wallpaper. In part, they have a kind of reflection of these states’ culture. East, above all, is famous for its habits of frequent changes of mood or environment like wallpaper, which imply more frequent renovation. The Muslims were the first who use the leather wall coverings.
The process of papering the walls with wallpaper starts with suitable type selecting. After all, every type has certain characteristics that help us to determine which of them are best (at least for us). There are so many manufacturers of wallpaper today. They provide us with a huge selection. It is possible to paste all the rooms of the house with it, despite the humidity or the possible contamination. In order not to get lost in such a great variety, you need to sort out the kinds and types of wallpaper.
Phased process of papering the walls with wallpaper
The wallpaper type selected for pasting the walls will determine the next steps. But most things remain the same for different types of coverage.
Firstly, you should get all the necessary tools. They can be borrowed, of course, but it’s still better to have own. Approximate list of necessary tools and accessories for papering the walls with wallpaper:
- The very first thing is wallpaper and glue. Most widespread types of wallpaper are already reviewed. The adhesive will be discussed further.
- Spatula and water to remove old wallpaper. You can use a special liquid to facilitate this “not interesting” job.
- Plaster, putty for the case when you want to dub walls.
- Sandpaper and primer to prepare walls before applying the adhesive.
- Screwdriver sockets, baseboards and other.
- Scissors or a sharp knife wallpaper or stationery. For easier cutting edges of wallpaper.
- Level or ruler (the latter would be even better) and thread with a load (plumb) at the end to make you able to hang wallpaper strictly vertical.
- First of all, it must have long pile and be wide. You can reserve and get a second. We need it to be compact for easy application of the adhesive on the edges of the wallpaper in the corners and other hardly reachable places.
- Dry and wet cloth. First to smooth irregularities on the wallpaper. For the same purpose can be applied a brush with soft horsehair. The second to remove glue from the wallpaper, which turned out to be waste.
- Do not forget about the ladder and a good mood.
When all the materials and tools are ready to go, it is necessary to begin preparations for the walls. First you need to remove old wallpaper. This can be done with a special solution; most importantly do not forget to read its instructions. Or just moisten the old wallpaper with warm water. And clean the wall with the help of a spatula or a scraper. Possible irregularities or cracks must be filled. If necessary, use sandpaper to give a smooth wall. If the walls are already plastered, it is necessary to wait a bit to give the surface dry.
After the preparations it would be necessary to prime the surface. Very often this process is neglected, but it is not worth to do so. Primer first of all is done to lower absorption of glue by the walls. This makes it possible to adjust the strip of wallpaper. That means, – to customize the picture or the joints. You can use wallpaper paste as a primer too. However, it must be diluted to a liquid state in this case. By the way, the primer protects your walls from the possible spread of various fungi or bacteria.
While the primer is being absorbed into the planned surface, you need to cut the wallpaper. Before this process, ensure that all rolls of the same package, as they can be of different tone or hue even if they of the same color. If your wallpaper has a pattern, it should be noted in pencil where to trim it exactly. Always leave a few centimeters of free sheet (in length). It is necessary to take into account the degree of bias of the wallpaper. This property can be found on the reverse side of the sheet, where appropriate figure followed by a number, which provides a displacement step. But as people say – “trust but verify”. Try to match up on the floor all the strips of wallpaper. After lubricating the sheet with glue, you can start to work. It is important not to mix up the upper and lower part of the wallpaper.
Choosing the necessary adhesive
Did you know that it is not very easy to choose the right glue for wallpaper? Here we have to consider many things. In addition to price and manufacturer, they have a number of characteristics that influence the selection.
If someone has already met with a choice of wallpaper adhesive, then he knows that the range of these substances is simply great. For vinyl wallpaper is one box, for textile – another one. And nobody ever asked why there are so many of them, and why not to make a single package for all occasions?
Everything is not so easy, because each type of glue is used for different types of wallpaper. Some wall coverings are heavier, others are lighter. For example, paper wallpaper can be pasted with most types of adhesives. That means you have no need to buy some special agent for it. As they say, why should we overpay? Another thing is a paper basis. The structure is different. But vinyl wallpaper is too heavy for general purpose adhesives. So it turns out that there is a cheaper material, and there is also more expensive.
There is another interesting thing for inexperienced masters. There is wallpaper paste with an indicator. If someone tried to lubricate the sheet, you may remember that it was not always clear which part has the adhesive application and which is not. The indicator represents such kind of material, which makes wallpaper glue colored upon contact with water. After a while the colorant loses its color and becomes inconspicuous.
If you walk through the specialty stores that sell wallpaper glue, you can see the pack with the inscription “curb adhesive”. It is denser and is characterized by a higher drying rate. Any adhesive is in powder form. It should be diluted in water in respect to recipe, which is indicated on the pack. To avoid the formation of lumps, it is advisable to fill the glue into the water slowly, stirring all the time. Typically, the mixture is necessary to stand for half an hour. Thereafter, it should be mixed again.
How to DIY wallpaper the wall correctly. Sticking angles
External corner glued as follows: cut the strip of wallpaper on the 2.5 cm more than the previous band to the corner. Then you need to seal the band bending on the opposite corner at the same time. If the angle is right – the residue is sticking end to end, otherwise the rest should be glued with overlapping by vertical layout. Now we take a sharp knife and lead it along the corner of a ruler, cutting the rests and pressing the edges. By the way, the vinyl wallpaper is glued only in end to end way.
Inside corner: first, you must know that it is not worth to paste a whole sheet of the wallpaper on it, because it is likely will be crooked and you get a rejection or folds. Now, before you start you need to measure the distance from the corner to the latest strip (sheet) and add 2 cm. Now, knowing the right size cut the strip and glue it to the corner and the wall. To paper stuck better in the corner, it is necessary to run it with a small object, such as the blunt end of the knife. If you have thick wallpaper, paste the remaining piece necessarily using a plumb with an overlap on the adjacent portion of the wall. Now take a knife and a ruler pass along the angle, remove the residues and press the edges. Since the joint would be imperceptible.
