5 Common Household Pests and How to Keep Them Away

As a homeowner, fighting pests is a full-time job. Here are some of the most common household pests and how to keep them under control.

All the design, personalization, and modern appliances can’t save a home from the annoying scourge of household pests.

Whether they are a bit of a bother or are infesting your entire house, you need to know how best to deal with them. You see advertisements for dozens of methods and products, but how do you keep them away for good?

We have answers to the most common household pests. Read on below to get started on clearing out your house.

  1. Cockroaches

Cockroaches are the quintessential pest. They are small enough to hide almost anywhere and cause major damage to your home. They can contaminate your food, spread disease, and stain and destroy clothing.

They are very resilient, so the occasional bug spray is useless. Remove any food and water that is out in the open for them to get to. Then start removing places to hide with traps. This will corner them out of your house.

  1. Mice/Rats

While mice and even rats have their charm, they can be major pests to your food and home. They eat a lot of food, burrow into your wood, and even on rare occasions carry grime and disease.

There is a large variety of rodent traps on the market. They all can work. Like the roaches, cleaning away left out food is essential. Keep in mind food in your yard like bird feeders.

  1. Spiders

The classic creepy crawlies can be frightening or even disgusting. Spiders also often make webs and take over entire corners of the house.

They do eat other insects, but having them out in the living room and kitchen is far worse than the lack of flies. If they are poisonous, then you need to get rid of them for your safety.

There are a few tricks on how to kill spiders. They have the common thread in this list of removing their food sources. After that, it depends on the spider.

  1. Termites

Termites are the destroyers of wood and the vast majority of houses should fear a termite infestation. They can burrow almost anywhere and often you don’t spot them until the damage is already done.

Termite removal depends on their type. Because of their food source is your house, they are the one pest that you can’t get rid of by sealing away your food.

Professional help will be the order of the day here. They are invasive and pose a greater danger than ruining some food. Don’t hesitate.

  1. Ants

The other classic pest invader, ants are one of the most common pests ever. Most homes have an ant invasion in the first year. Unlike spiders or even cockroaches, ants come in droves and often an entire colony is nearby.

Go through your house and caulk up any unneeded holes in the house. As well, make sure you clean all surfaces of any food sources. Even a bit of sugar can send ants marching.

Traps and sprays are your best bet once the initial lines have gone. If it persists, you may need a professional to check your smaller spaces for a deeper infestation.

Keeping Control of the Household Pests

Household pests can range from annoying to downright dangerous. While every animal has its place, the point of your house is to have control over your domain. The pests will have to remain outside!

Once the household pests are clear, you can get back to what matters to you. Making your home happy and liveable can take a lot of guidance, and we have plenty more ideas and guidance to help your house become a home.
