Main Features of Mediterranean Interior Design Style

This style is very benevolent for handcrafted furniture. Most often it is made of bog oak or pine. Additionally, many people use the special “Mediterranean” color theme to paint the furniture according to this style. But the color palette varies in different countries. For example, in Greece – it is of cold shades (white, all shades of blue and emerald). Italians prefer warm colors (yellow, red, pink, cream, terracotta, ocher-yellow, and brick).

Outdoor Swinging Beds Ceiling Swing ChairsThe Greek-style ceilings and walls painted in white, despite this rough look of the finish. Therefore, this option is ideal for uneven walls, as it will save money and effort for the wall alignment. The Italian style in the decoration of the walls combines multiple textures. For example, mosaic tiles, decorative plaster, wall paintings, and imitation of frescoes. Mediterranean style interior uses a minimum of the floor covering. The main material is tile in warm colors. Marble mosaic depicting scenes from ancient Greek myths gives sophistication to the floor covering. Moreover, you can lay a mat of reeds or seaweed on the top of the tile. They are quite durable and create an atmosphere of closeness to nature. It is worth remembering that a cold climate is not suitable for such floors, so it’s best to take care of the providing of floor heating. You can use tiles instead of wooden floors. It is necessary to take into account not to make the texture of the tree too splashy, and not to locate it in the center among the other interior parts.

Meditteranean Furniture

Regardless of the stylistic focus of the room, opt for wooden pieces of furniture. To convey the richness of Italian aesthetics, opt for furniture with finely wrought iron elements. A living room interior usually includes a low sofa, a couple of armchairs, a coffee table, a bookcase, or a shelving unit. In addition, you can put a chest of drawers. Place lamps and high chairs for decoration.

Filling the living room with simple “rustic” wooden furniture is quite Greek. Wicker chairs and poufs with cotton covers and capes are also acceptable. In this case, the furniture should be arranged so that there is enough space for comfortable movement.

Summing up, the main distinctive traits of Mediterranean styled furniture in your home can be the following:

  1. Large dining table for 4-6 people for a comfortable meal.
  2. Kitchen set. Choose bespoke sets made from natural wood with ceramic, glass inserts, and metal fittings.
  3. Chairs. You can choose a set of wooden chairs with wide backs or graceful metal frames and soft seats. Chairs upholstered with cotton or linen fabric in a cage will look harmonious.
  4. Cupboard. The interior of a Mediterranean-style kitchen allows for a laconic cabinet model with open shelves filled with beautiful accessories (bright kitchen utensils or decorative plates).
  5. Tabletop. Opt for natural stone countertops, ceramic tiles, or a combination of both.
  6. Sink. The large bronze ceramic sink will perfectly complement your kitchen interior.

Mediterranean Decor

When it comes to window decoration, shutters are the best solution for Mediterranean-style house interiors. At the same time, as practice shows, they look organically not only in a country house but also in an ordinary city apartment.

Another win-win Mediterranean-style window design is snow-white curtains on a wrought-iron cornice. Ideally, the curtains should be lace. In sunny weather, they will cast beautiful shadows, as if from the foliage of trees.

Even the most luxurious Mediterranean style interiors are characterized by the restraint and simplicity of an ordinary fishing hut. So, don’t forget about the ropes. They are suitable for use as stair railings and decorative elements.

To complete the picture, we add lamps with wicker lampshades, forged furniture, as well as furniture, and trimmings with a marine theme. Our list of interests includes nets, boats, fish, and anchors in furniture, fabrics, and wallpaper. But remember: our goal is to set accents, but in no case turn the house into a maritime museum. One, even the most beautiful, boat in a city apartment will be enough.

Add some greenery as a final touch. The Mediterranean style house is surrounded by a lush garden. In the interior, this feeling will be created by citrus trees in tubs. For ease of maintenance, it is better to use a planter with a built-in automatic watering system. They will take care of the houseplants for the time we want to leave the city and go on a Mediterranean cruise for a new dose of experience and accessories for our Mediterranean style interior.

Bedroom Decoration

You should reduce all the decorative elements in the traditional Greek bedroom to a minimum. Of all the most necessary furniture are a bed, dresser, linen closet, and a small cupboard. To add some diversity to the interior, you can use textiles: crisp white linens, colorful rugs, bedspreads, and blankets, as well as the linen curtains in the color of the walls. Furniture in Greek bedroom is mainly in bright colors and woven of cane or pine. Additionally, drawers, linen closets, chairs, and tables should be of the same style.

Furniture in the Italian style is made of black metal. Curved legs on the dressing table, symmetrical patterns on the back of the bed, and wicker seats of forged chairs – all these describe the Italian bedroom style. The only wooden object in the bedroom is a wardrobe in dark colors.

Making a Living in Mediterranean style

The living room is the place for the leisure of all family together or with friends. In Mediterranean countries, such meetings usually accompanied by a meal, so it is decided to combine the living room with the dining area. The table is the main subject in this room. Remember that there are wicker or wooden chairs and tables in the Greek style and the Italian style gravitates to wrought-iron furniture and wooden seats.

An essential attribute of the living room is a large number of seats: chairs, armchairs, and a few sofas. This set would be complemented by the coffee table, bookcases, and bookshelves, which are made of bog oak or pine. Bookcase with interesting wrought patterns is perfect for the storage of family items.

Bathroom Design in Mediterranean Style

Bath walls and ceiling are trimmed with tile in the Mediterranean style. It is advisable to apply the lining of different colors. For example, cover the walls with azure-colored mosaics and the floor with terracotta tiles. So, try to hide all the plumbing and communication in the bathroom on the wall. This is quite practical. It is much easier to make cleaning when the floors are free, as well as to create the visual effect of a spacious room. Pick up the furniture on the same principle: closed or open shelves, wall cabinets, towel holders, and clothes hooks on the doors and walls. Textile is virtually absent. The only one piece is well suited to Mediterranean style waffle towels.

The bathroom is illuminated by the spotlights which have elongated frosted glass plafonds. We recommend placing them so that the light directs only in the most necessary areas: sink, bathtub, and mirror. As a result, keep the rest of the corners in semi-darkness and coolness.

Making a Mediterranean-style Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the house In all the Mediterranean countries. Residents of the Mediterranean are very serious about cooking, so the kitchen should be spacious and well-planned. The basis of the interior is an archaic simplicity. All furniture should be antique or imitate it:

  • stand-alone cabinets and cupboards with the effect of aging;
  • Black wrought iron tables and chairs;
  • old wicker chairs, baskets, and boxes.

Typically, the Mediterranean kitchen usually appears in combination with the dining room. The main subject of kitchen units is a large table. It is better to locate it at the center and hide the work area under the large niche. Appliances look inconspicuous and easy. Despite the fact that the furniture seems rustic, it should attract attention. Lighting in the kitchen should be natural, so the windows have to be large. Illuminate the kitchen with a simple chandelier in the evening. On the other hand, Choosing a Mediterranean interior, we must remember that any of its directions means simplicity and conciseness. Choose only the three primary colors for painting the floor, walls, and ceiling. For a more sophisticated design, you can mix up and overlaying similar shades with each other. But the classic style always remains the spirit of the country with its unpretentiousness and simplicity. To keep the apartment or house fully in the spirit of the Mediterranean style, it is necessary to choose the right furniture in all the rooms. Thus, integrating into a coherent whole is rather easy: either forged as in Italy, or wicker as in Greece.
