Preparing for DIY Wallpapering Advice

This article can be reviewed as spin-off part for “How to DIY Wallpaper the Wall Correctly“. Wallpaper should be glued on pre-rendered surface or drywall. Never experiment with applying new wallpaper on top of old ones. In the case of the painted surface – simply wash the walls. The porous or unpainted surface should be processed with wallpaper paste. Without such procedure wallpaper sheets will be difficult to move along the wall, which will affect the alignment of the pattern. Before applying wallpaper glue directly on the wall must be dry.

Before gluing the wallpaper wall surfaces should be leveled and primed.

It is recommended to start gluing from the corner – it helps to hide the pattern defects when poor-quality superposition of sheets that are glued first and the last. If the room some architectural forms (arch or fireplace) and the wallpaper has a pretty big figure, the first sheet you must stick with pattern along the axis of the architectural element. Others sheets glued on both sides of the first one. Having defined the starting point, in the future you can use the roll as a template to mark the position on the surface of the panels. Thus it is possible to determine the location of the joints in inconvenient places and change the initial point when necessary.

If you have not previously encountered such a procedure, and “do not want to commit follies”, it is better to use wallpaper with an arbitrary pattern. It will allow you to focus on technique of gluing, rather than on a combination of patterns. By the way, for beginners it is better to use wallpaper with the ready-made adhesive layer.

The work begins with aт evaluation of the direction of the pattern. It can be seen on a roll on the corresponding arrow, which points to the stream.

Cutting wallpaper with a pattern

At the beginning, let’s deal with the character of the pattern on the wallpaper, because the pattern can be either symmetric or asymmetric relatively to the sheet’s axis. It is also important when calculating the number of rolls. Length between repeating pattern of wallpaper is called rapport or simply a pattern step. The step length can vary from 5 to 30 cm. The larger step length, the more complex customized pattern is and accordingly there will be more waste.

It is necessary to measure the height of the walls and add 10-15 cm from each end to fit, and then expand the roll and place the sheets. If a workplace has the necessary size, it can be used as a template. First we need to cut the cloth with a small pass of 50 mm. Pattern on the second canvas must be combined with a pattern on the ground. You can note the length of the sheets and the arrangement of the pattern for the odd and even cloth at the workplace. Horizontally identical wallpaper with a pattern have mating patterns on opposite ends of the sheets. Different horizontally wallpaper halves of patterns are often displaced by a half-step pattern at opposite ends of mating (look below).

Choosing the glue for the wallpaper

Successful sticking largely depends on the proper selection and application of the adhesive. First of all, when buying wallpaper, always pay attention to the manufacturer’s instructions of using the adhesive. If those are not available, you can always ask the specialists or retailer. It is imperative to determine whether to use an adhesive with the addition of a fungicide or it is not necessary. This adhesive mixture prevents the formation of mold, therefore is used for gluing of washable or vinyl (waterproof) wallpaper. The packaging indicates the type of adhesive and material consumption by the number Wallpaper.

Organic and synthetic adhesive mixtures are available in solid or liquid form. A solution prepares by slow precipitation of package content and mixing it with the required quantity of water. To avoid lumps, the solution must be continuously mixed, and then give it a time to thicken and sludge (time specified by the manufacturer). Glue is able to keep its properties for about one week, but it should be kept in an airtight container.

Liquid glue should be poured directly into the tank and is used in their work.

Gluing

First we need to spread the sheet on the working surface with the pattern down. Then apply glue to the middle of the cloth and smear to the sides with a brush. Particular attention should be paid to the edges. If the glue got on the floor, it is better to wipe it out with a damp cloth. Are sheets ready? Ok, now we fold them glue inside. This arrangement will facilitate the transfer to the wall and protect it against drying out. The sheet can be folded in the same fashion once again if necessary.

All wallpaper, except for very thin types, you’ll need to leave for the impregnation: 2-3 minutes to less dense types, and up to 15 minutes for more dense ones. The duration is usually written in the instructions on the package. Impregnated with glue wallpaper will prevent the emergence of bubbles and softens them, making direct the process of gluing easier. Therefore, impregnated with adhesive sheet is better to put aside and start treating another. During working you need to keep an eye on glue not getting to the front part and a working place where you’ll lay the next roll. To do this, you can put your desktop on a few layers of white blank paper and remove them as wallpaper processing. By the way, answering to your next question: “No, the newspaper can not be used, otherwise its paint will leave unwanted decor on your wallpaper.”
