- Aluminum plank (Pinion) ceiling benefits
- Types of suspended ceilings
- Design and installation of lath ceiling
Before talking about the metal plank ceilings, you must turn to the history of their origin. Start of 90th years of XX century can be considered as a period of drastically new fashion and technologies. It is when Pinion aluminum ceilings appeared. They were supplied by Germany and characterized, as well as any novelty, with comparatively high cost. The novelty was appreciated, and the popularity of such ceilings had increased with each passing day. Because of its basic characteristics, the material has become widely used in the renovation of kitchens and bathrooms. Manufacturers began to produce both standard white ceiling over time, and with all possible sorts of color inserts. This made it possible to create not only practically furnished areas, but also to preserve the integrity of the design decisions.
Metal plank (Pinion) ceiling is fast, practical and aesthetically pleasing way to design ceiling in the apartment. The high strength, water resistance, durability, as well as a large selection of textures and colors will definitely help to create a modern and unusual interior of any room.
This finishing option the ceiling is used in residential and public areas is widely used in industrial facilities and even transport. As well as any other kind of suspended ceiling, it is able to hide surface defects, wiring, communications and sound-proofing materials.
Benefits of Pinion ceilings
- possibility to be used in rooms with high humidity;
- has a fairly high rate of shockproof;
- durability: steel and aluminum panels do not rust, do not fade in the sun. Ceiling can serve for more than 25 years.
- the possibility of combinations, a variety of color, shade and texture will help to create a unique design;
- environmentally friendly: the production of panels using environmentally friendly materials, so they are safe for health;
- Pinion ceiling is not subject to rot, does not accumulate dust, as well as it is easy to care for;
- high fire resistance allows its use in areas with increased demands for fire safety. The panels do not emit toxic substances at high temperatures;
- as well as any kind of suspended ceilings, it allows the installation of lighting fixtures and different climatic systems;
- Installation takes several hours and does not require any preparatory work: leveling plaster, primers, etc.
Pinion ceiling can be of two types:
When assembled, have gaps between the rails. They are fixed joint to joint in the likeness of a wooden lining.
The finished product has almost imperceptible gap between the components of the racks. There are special between-lath inserts of different colors and shapes, you can use to emphasize the elements of decor: lamps, separate zones.
Aluminum Plank (Pinion) Ceiling Construction, Design, Installation
Aluminum planks produce an aluminum sheet to a thickness of 0.7 mm and a width of 50-200 mm from various kinds of decorative coating. Panel length is 3 – 4 m, but there are other custom sizes. The front part of the panel is covered with paint in accordance with the international color RAL table. The inside part is covered with primer and varnish (5 microns). Each panel has a “comb” through which it fastens to the guide part. Ceiling is mounted to the support structure on spring suspensions. Pinion ceiling is decorated by framing with PL profile and RPP * 18 (U-shaped profile) around the perimeter.
Design and installation of Pinion ceiling
Ceiling planks are mounted using the so-called “teeth” that are on the aluminum or steel traverses. Each plank presupposes the certain traverse. To avoid defects you should buy both planks and traverses of one brand.
Mounting of Pinion ceiling is quite simple and does not require special knowledge and skills. Following the instructions below, you can easily assemble a ceiling yourself. It should be noted that the installation of a ceiling must be carried out least, when completed all repair and construction work. In the case of the ceiling electrical cable, you must ensure that it would not interfere.
The following tools required:
- level and laser level;
- metal shears;
- necessary material:
- Pinion ceiling;
- screws and dowels;
Installation begins with the installation of the ceiling rails. They are mounted around the perimeter of the room. Then mark the future location of the ceiling, which will be located in 15-20 cm below the original one. The next step is measuring. If installation work is carried out in a large room, you should use a laser level. Draw a horizontal line along which the profiles will be mounted. Standard profile length is 3 m. If you need a profile of shorter length, trim it using metal shears.
Apply the guiding profile line to the surface of the wall along the previously drawn, and then drill a hole in it. Place a dowel and a screw there. Attach all the profile in such way. Step should be 50-60 mm. After this, check your work is done properly (the profile is fasten linearly) with the level. You need to connect profiles at the corners of the room and check for level. You must get the perimeter of the room completed.
Now we take measurements for the installation of hangers (suspensions). The distance between their mounts is approximately 1 m. Suspensions are fixed by screws with dowels. Installed suspensions position checks at the same level. Traverses mounted to the suspension at a distance of no more than 1 m.
Traverses should be perpendicular to rails and located at the same level as the profile perimeter. They are attached to the suspensions by the screw driver. It is important to mount a smooth surface without defects. It affects the appearance of the ceiling.
Traverse length may be insufficient. In this case, it can be overlapped. To do this suspension is fixed at the beginning of the next traverse. The second traverse is a butt joint with the first. By setting the traverse, you can begin to mount the ceiling planks.
Next, remove the protective tape strips and then cut them to the size of the room. Planks must be placed in the guides and latch by the entire length of the traverse.
P.S. We highlighted only the aluminum planked ceiling, but it doesn’t mean there no other types of Pinion ceilings. For example, there are wooden, plastic, PVC and other types of planks for the top of your apartment and new ones appear almost every year. We only can imagine what will be in rage tomorrow…
